Case Study:

The story is like this. After Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, Texas, many areas marked for green space for the reason of safety. But this plan to shrink New Orleans Failed after the opposition of local residents. On the one side, it is good for planers and government to mark some of the area which is below the sea level to be the green space for the reason of safety. And it is very expensive to rebuild the houses at these area which used to be the neighborhood. But on the other side. Because this low area used to be the neighborhood of poor African American, if you mark these area to be green, you just push them away from this city, where are they going? And there are some voice from some resident:"There was a lack of awareness of a simple notion that planning somehow could be untethered from people,"said Landrieu, who grew up in Broadmoor, part of which was covered by a green dot. "People thought, someone is trying to put a green dot on my neighborhood. they didn't really think about me". Someone said:"For me, there was no fair price because this was my home, and I had no intention of moving, nor could I fathom a reason why I should move."






So the point is value of 'Collaboration' is challenged. I talked with my mentor Duncan. He said the community was not involved in the process and rejected it city-wide. The infamous "green- dot map" was released in the city's newspaper, before a robust community involvement effort was stated.


I think, to be an architect or planer, the Collaboration and Transparency is very important. What we are dealing with is people's everyday life. We can not decide something even when what we are doing is good for them. We should always stand in their position and think about what they are thinking. And we need enough communication with them and understand their reason of doing things. What we think right would not be right in their stand point of view.
