Reflections

This week has been very short, because of the fall break (I took a day off on Monday) and office closures (Thursday and Friday), but I felt I was able to contribute a lot during the 9.5 hours I worked. This can also be a matter of perception: as I only spend a limited time in the office each day, overall I get to work on a higher number of tasks, though each of smaller duration. So when I look back, it looks like I was involved in a lot of tasks and it is easy to believe that I had gotten a lot done, but individually those tasks may have been of lower complexity. I would like to work on more complex tasks as my experience matures, but the format of this internship is likely not a good fit to fulfill those aims.

One of the positives of working in this small office environment is that you become more aware of the broader aspects of the projects you work on, being called upon to help on a variety of tasks, and you feel a closer bond to the people that you work with. While I enjoy a lot of informal freedom with my colleagues, and even as I use this freedom playfully at times, as an intern I try to avoid having an entitlement mindset. My willful indulgence in this exercise has led me to a humbling and character–building experience, and definitely complements and builds upon my previous educations as an engineer and business analyst.
