My biggest take away from this week is how liable architects are for the work of others. I sat down with my principals and listened to them not only explain their system of documentation but also recount their first hand experiences with being held accountable for something done incorrectly on a project. It is very important to not only document every email correspondence but to also document the work done on the project during site visits. Architects are not only the designers but the coordinators of the building and by being the coordinators we undertake a bulk of the responsibility for how it gets built. The thoughtful structuring of the contract to begin the project is also important in structuring the responsibilities of the architect. This all seemed very overwhelming at first but with thoughtful coordination and responsible care an architect can be successfully manage the buildings they design.
