Perry Hammond - Week Three

This week, the office was closed Monday. I had three days to finish up the model for 667 King Street so that it can be used in the BAR presentation next week (depending on what Irma decides to do). I have really enjoyed working on this model. For me, the repetitive motions and kinesthetic engagement of model making can be almost therapeutic or meditative often time. This week I have notice how humans are so drawn to things we can touch or pick up or see in three dimensions. I have been working on this model at a table adjacent to the break room so almost every time someone comes to get coffee they will stop by and say hey and check out the progress, often picking up some pieces and looking them over. In my opinion, a three dimensional object has the potential for a much higher informative value than a two dimensional drawing. For example, as this model came together, it became much more apparent the scale of the building we were proposing, compared to its context: its huge. But place it in downtown Greenville and this building would be in the shadow of others. This project has taught me a lot about Charleston, its architecture, and its urban fabric. My teammates continue to provide wonderful assistance whenever I need it, while keeping me accountable to schedule, craft, and understanding. I can't wait to see how the BAR presentation goes.
