This week I worked on modeling a house in Tennessee in Sketchup. Generating 3D models and graphics are my favorite parts of architecture so I was excited to take on this project. Jumping onto this project and working on it at the rate I do made me feel much more productive after spending so much time on a physical model. This meant it was a great time to reflect on the influence of the computer in my architectural career.
I've always been told I do a great job on physical models, and every final model I have made has been used for the school's accreditation, but I am always my own worst critic on my models. Typically I will mess up on a part or two or run out of time and feel I did not do the best job I could, which also applies to hand drawings. Digitally though, Ctrl + Z is second nature to me and I will tweak things until I feel they are perfect.
With the floor plans and elements of the 3D predetermined, meaning I wasn't going through the design process on the model, I began thinking of it like I did with the physical model. This meant I had to slow down, think out how I would go through the process, and reduce the amount of times I would redo. I learned that going through the process that way in this instance sped up my process in the long run and kept me mentally on track.
