This week I learned how long the design process takes. I further worked on the Tennessee house, adding the structural systems. While looking at the documentation on projects I noticed some started back in 2016 and are still getting changes. I attended a BAR meeting Wednesday and saw projects that were in the works for a year or 2 that are still being designed, which surprised me even more. Studio has always been start and finish a design in a couple of months, so seeing the time scale of real projects still seems foreign to me. Wanting to know more I looked at what was done up until this point in the project and it baffled me how much time is taken by permitting, changes in the design, bidding, etc. Continuing on, I want to dive deeper into what that time is allocated to and learn the full process deeper.
Working on making structural models and creating a physical model for a client taught me more about craft and how it is vital in a great design that is worth the work of an architect. I learned more about time saving techniques and how to best plan out time to accomplish the most in a period of time.
